VSWR

VSWR

This is the maximum amplitude on a trasmission line to the minimum amplitude on the transmission line, expressed as:

Its = viswa(MAX)/viswa(MIN)

REFECTION COEFFICIENT

p = Is the Greek letter "rho" and expresses reflection coefficient, expressed as:

p = viswa-1/viswa +1

It can be seen when viswa is infinite p=1 and when the viswa=1 then p=0. By multiplying p times 100 and squaring, the percentage of power reflected in the source is found.

RETURN LOSS

This is simply the logarithmic expression of "rho". This is defined as return loss (dB)= -20 log ten p. This quantity is the amount of power returned to the source relative to the amount of power delivered.

MEASURING

Use of a viswa meter will provide a scale that presents the data in terms of viswa. If directional couplers are used then the absolute reflected power will be known and calculations will put this data into any desired form. A directional bridge will present either "rho" or return loss depending on the ancillary equipment.
