California's RoHS and EU RoHS differ in the type of hazardous substances that are restricted. In the California RoHS, the use of lead, mercury, cadmium and hexavalent chromium are restricted. As for the maximum allowable concentrations, DTSC will still incorporate the EU’s guidelines as the standard (0.01% for cadmium and 0.1% for the rest).

Some states in the United States are moving toward RoHS-like regulations, such as California, which, as of January 1, 2007, implemented RoHS legislation pertaining to display devices.

Thus the component devices that comply with the requirements of the EU RoHS Directive will not be banned from sale in California under the state’s RoHS law.

China RoHS regulations will likely restrict the same six substances as those identified in Europe RoHS – lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls and polybrominated diphenyl ether's – and possibly more.

South Korea, has announced its intention to introduce similar environmental legislation.

Other Nations – are enacting legislation similar to the Europe’s Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive, which puts responsibility on manufacturers to take back equipment at the end of its life cycle, to recycle parts and safely dispose of toxic materials.
