MIL-STD-217
For electronic components, the most popular and widely accepted models are MIL-HDBK-217, Bellcore, RDF 2000 standard from France Telecom and the HRD5 standard from the UK.
Mil-Std-217 was developed for military & aerospace applications. It is becoming widely used for industrial and commercial electronic equipment applications throughout the world.
Producing calculated Failure Rate & MTBF numbers for individual components & equipment. Component stresses, such as environment, temperature, voltage, current, and power levels apply.
FAILURE RATE- can be defined as the total number of failures within an time population, divided by the total time expended by that population. Typically stated in number of failures per million hours.
MTBF(Mean Time Before Failure)- MTBF is thee average time, in hours, during which all components of the system perform within their specified limits until they fail.
MTBF = 1/lambda
BELLCORE
The main concepts in MIL-HDBK-217 and Bellcore reliability prediction are very similar, Bellcore added the ability to take into account burn-in, field, and laboratory testing. This added ability has made the Bellcore standard very popular with commercial organizations. Bellcore is known as Telcordia now and the current version is Issue 1, and follows Bellcore Issue 6.
RDF 2000
RDF 2000 is a newer version of the CNET 93 standard, developed by UTE. It uses cycling profiles and their application provides a completely different basis for failure rate calculations.
CNET 93
CNET 93 (a.k.a. RDF 93) is a standard developed by France Telecom© that provides reliability models for a wide range of components. CNET 93 is a comprehensive model similar to MIL-HDBK-217, which provides a detailed stress analysis.
HRD5 STANDARD
HRD5 is a standard developed by British Telecommunications, that also provides models for a wide range of components. The HRD5 is similar to CNET 93 (a.k.a. RDF93), providing simpler models and requires fewer data parameters for analysis.
